Magic Gadgets and Gizmos!

Within magic, there are lots of things to learn and buy, and all kinds of reasons for doing so.  Sometimes we want to add a new piece of magic to an act that makes us a living – other times, we might just REALLY want to know how a trick is done.  Both are good.

Often, finding out how a trick works leads to disappointment, on some level at least.  I often hear people talking about a trick that I love, and perhaps even do, by saying ‘well, it’s only rough and smooth’ or ‘it’s only a folding coin’ or whatever.  Most of the time, the methods just aren’t as clever as you think they are going to be.

Sometimes though, the method can be genius, and sometimes even the best part of the trick!
Below are a list of my favourite ‘Gadgets and Gizmos’ from Dudethatscoolmagic.co.uk

Reality Twister

When this trick first came out, it was packaged with a pen and the lens, and it is fair to say, it split the magic community in two.  Half of them proclaiming it was the best trick ever, others saying it was little more than a toy.

What can’t be disputed is the coolness of the lens.  What is it?  How does it work?  These are all fine questions that I have no answers for!  But what I can promise you is that you will LOVE playing with it, and now packaged with a well produced book of ideas, it is a seriously visual and fun non-card trick.

Slowmotion

I first saw this when it launched at Magic Live convention.  It was the TALK of the convention, and literally EVERYONE I know bought one.  Check out the demo.  The stick is normal, and can be borrowed.  The sweet is normal, and can be borrowed.  There is no thread, and no magnets.  So how does it work?  Well, I’m not going to tell you.  But, I can assure you that if James Bond did magic – this is how he would roll!

Pena Coin

Truly a classic of close up magic, the method behind this simple looking trick is inspired!  In effect, a coin passes through a sheet of rubber that is fastened to the top of a glass with an elastic band.  The rubber is solid – there are no holes.  The coin, after the penetration, is really in the glass.  Everything can be checked.  How does it work?  If you haven’t seen it – trust me.  You will NEVER guess! :D

Rattled

A great utility device, extremely fooling and exceptionally well made.  While maybe not always a magician fooler, this cunning bit of kit will add a nice convincer to a lot of other tricks.  Try adding it to the Nest of Wallets – the implication that the ring or coin is still in play when you remove the Wallets makes both tricks much, much stronger!  Plus, how many other props let your spectator vanish a coin on their own?

Strip

My final choice was an easy one – I have and use this little gadget, and absolutely love it.  It caused quite a fuss when it was new, but now the hype has died down a bit, it’s the perfect time to bust this back out.  What’s really great is just how versatile the gimmick is – the DVD shows all kinds of routines and ideas, and after all of them, it can be examined!

So there are my favourite 5 gadgets and gizmos.  Any I missed?  Any that you prefer?  Let us know!

Until next time (if not before…)
