Five Top Pick Tricks
I try not to use the word favourite, because I’m sure in a couple of weeks time my list could be totally different. But here are a bundle of tricks that I think sort of flew under the radar, and why I like them, and most of them are suitable for complete beginners, or those with just the smallest amount of experience.
Kidz Kardz by Richard Pinner.
This is a great trick, because the old Mental Photography / Svengali decks are great tricks, but rarely seen used in a professional capacity - a combination of their familiarity and availability to lay people as well as magicians.
But Kids Kards is a great new innovation - a new presentation for a tried and tested method, which I think is always a winner. It means you can very quickly put it into your set.
The cards look great as well - normally with this kind of thing, I end up making the gimmicks myself to look more authentic, but with this one, it worked straight out of the box.
Powerball 60 by Richard Sanders and Bill Abbott.
Based on an old classic trick that has been readily available for years, this new dressing really makes something new of it, and renders it completely indistinguishable from it’s grandfather trick.
It definitely seems pricey for what you get, but when you bear in mind that you can just slip the scratch cards into your wallet and you can use it anytime, anywhere, in any situation, it very quickly pays for itself. It’s highly unlikely that you will catch me without this in my wallet, and I think it’ll be there for a long time yet!
Money Paddle - Magic Makers
The Paddle Move is a classic, and while it always looks positively terrible on webcams, in real life it’s one of the easiest and most deceptive moves a beginning magician can learn, and will probably use forever.
The Money Paddle is one I’ve chosen simply because it has many phases, and a very strong and definite ‘end’, which a lot of other paddle routines lack. Also, if you just make the Mirror appear on one side at the end, everything is left clean and examinable, so this really is a keeper.
Pena Coin - Empire
Now, this really is a classic. The first time I saw this, it totally, totally blew my mind. I hadn’t been into magic long, but I was still pretty good with methods, and I don’t ever remember being this badly fooled, before or since. I literally had no clue.
It’s not without it’s flaws - it takes a knack to set up, and you need to have it ready to go before you start, but for sheer visual coolness and the fact that it’s examinable after, and has the most counter intuitive method EVER, it’s well worth dropping a few quid and reviving this classic trick. Make some laymen feel how I did that time :)
Cardtoon - Dan Harlan
Without a doubt, Dan Harlan made a billion pounds from this trick. And rightfully so. What a MONSTER!
Easy to do, quick to instant reset, cute, funny, and NO FORCE! That’s right, the little fella always reveals the named card. Different every time.
I think this really demonstrates Dan’s creativity. A lot of magicians could have come up with the flip book idea, but I think they would have all forced the card first. Putting in the extra thought to make this so clean and practical and easy really makes it the perfect card trick, in my opinion.
While it’s not really fair to say it flew under the radar by ANY means, it’s certainly not as commonly seen now as it was all those years back. That makes it the perfect time to bring it out again. Dig your pack out of the draw, or pick up a shiny new one. You’ll be glad you did!
Until next time (if not before…)
